Question:

I need permission to delete files on my computer...

I have the administrator account on my laptop, and I'm the ONLY user on there. I can't seem to delete folders in the Program Files on the C drive, and I'm running out of room - (the program files folders take up a lot of room). I was going to move them over to the D drive to free up some space, but it tells me I need permission.

How can I possibly get permission if I'm the only user and more importantly, administrator?

I'm running Vista, by the way. (God, I miss XP....*rolls eyes*)

  1. Vista could be detecting that if you move those folders certain things may not work or, it could be the your D drive requires some special permissions to write to it. If they are program folders then just uninstall them and reinstall on the D: it is better to do it like that anyway. If they are personal files then follow these directions. Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > right-click notepad and run as admin. In note pad go to file > open > browse to the folder you want to move > right-click and cut > browse to the new location on D: > right-click and paste. If it still doesn't work then your D: drive has some sort of protection on it.

  2. boot in safe mode click administrator account.

    then try.

  3. 'C:/Program Files' is the default location to install software on a Windows System, some of those folders may not take getting moved too well.  It may be that the folders that you may be trying to move may have been locked because an active process was using data there.
