  1. 1.a hole in the ground and a liner

    2. same hole

    3. 24 inches minimum

    4. get a shovel

    5. water lillies are good

    6. get a heater for a small portion of it or make it deeper

    7. they can be

    8. heavy equipment

i also live in ohio and built a pond. it usually does not freeze all the way to the bottom. i keep regular goldfish in it. if you want Koi, go much deeper.

there are also deck ponds. smaller decorative tubs.

if you are sure you want one, go for it. otherwise start small.

  2. My husband built our pond and stream with waterfall using the liner method.  We hauled river rock to use along the stream and around the pond.  We needed a skimmer because our pond is under a tree and we also installed an ultraviolet light filter.  We live on the Oregon coast where the weather is generally rather cool and have a lot of problems with string algae so we use an algaecide on a regular basis.  You need an area in the pond at least 3 feet deep so the fish have a deep area to use to get away from predators - which include sea birds in our area, as well as racoons.  There are any number of pond plants to use; they help the ponds stay clean and give the fish roots to nibble on, as well as shelter from the sun and somewhere to hide if attacked.  Commonn gold fish do better in ponds but fancies don't - they tend to not be able to swim as well and don't winter well.  Our winters here are pretty mild, not much cooler than our summers, but I think you'd need to put your fish in tanks for cold winters like you've mentioned.  You can get books at the library on how to build ponds and they provide much info to help you determine the size of pumps you'll need.  My fish are very happy and they're a joy to have; each afternoon when I feed them they see me coming and get all excited about feeding time.  You can feed them out of your hand and they'll nibble around on you're hand looking for food - I call this fish kisses.  My cats use the pond and stream as a favorite place to drink out of doors.

  3. First I'll answer your questions

1.\   One pond for the both of them they live quite well together they     2./ also comets, shubunkins, goldfish and koi all live in harmony.

    3. Goldfish like it 18" deep koi will have to be 3' to 4 ' feet deep.  Koi can become quite large up to 36" long

    4.By researching you prices first

    5.See suggestions below for plants

    6. Buy a deicer to keep it from freezing solid it will keep a hole open and allow the methane gas from fish waste to escape and NOT kill your fish.

7.I want to add another 1000 gallons it so much fun...the koi will eat from your hand and so do the goldfish.

    8.  I was a 62 years old woman that built my first one I kept making it bigger until I reached 2000 gallons. I also installed a GFIC Circuit breakers by the pond to run the pimps and equipment

The very first thing I suggest is research your project go on line to find the lowest prices available for equipment you will need.  Don't be afraid to ask questions.

Suggestion on the Firestone EPDM liner buy the liner as near home as you can some garden centers carry it Home Depot has it..It's heavy and shipping would be expensive.  Make sure to use a geotextile

underlayment to prevent rocks and critters from penetrating from under the pond through the liner it's self

    Geotextile underlayment/ good prices

    AZ Ponds/usually the best prices

    Pumps/and skimmers amd aerators

Pondmaster pumps are built to run 24/7 and that is what you need

they rarely never break down they wear out and is easy to fix all you do is replace the impeller. NO oil usage to leak into a pond.

    Please Note

I use 1 PM2400 pump inside my skimmer and have a line from that attached to 2 fish mate UV/BIO filters it keeps all green split soup algae out. I have a 8 and a 16 watt

Heavy running water is the cause of string for filamentous algae.
