  1. 1. Are you buying a preform or building one on your own with a liner or cement? Preforms can be purchased inexpensively at many lawn/garden homedepo's and lowes just to name a few. Liners also are sold at the same places. You will need to decide how large and how deep. Calculate the volume of water.  You need a liner of some kind set into the ground. Doesn't make much difference what you go with. Preform's are pretty much set so there is no adding to them. You will also need a pump/filter. Preferably if you don't have a water fall of any kind one that is large enough for the pond you choose to build with fountain adaptations.

These are the two basics for a pond.

    2. Same thing as numbe 1

    3. A pond needs to be a minimum of 3 feet deep in areas where your fish can winter. Unless you live somewhere in northern Canada then it will need to be much deeper.

    4. Digging your own pond may seem like it is the easiest way to go, however the rubber liner you will need costs $9.00 per sq. foot. That isn't always the most inexpensive way to go where the larger preforms (300-400) gallon will run around 2-3hundred dollars. However you cannot shape the pond the way you want and are limited to where you can put it. and how you can decorate it.

    5. You dont' need any plants. They are nice to have for your fish and any small fry soon to come. I like using lilly's, water hyciths and water lettuce. Mostly becuase these types of plant the hyciths and lettuce are seasonal, do not require any care shade the pond and allow your fish to graze any time they like. They also hid the fish from would be preaditors. In fall you can remove the floaters and be done with the clean up till spring.

    6. You don't want to keep the pond from freezing. Hybernation for fish of this type is fine. One important rule of thumb is, never pound or break the ice. Doing this in a preform / man made pond will kill your fish. Let it freeze over. Once in hybernation the fish do not need to eat until the water temps reach 50 and above in the spring. If you choose to use a heater (not recomended) you will need to ensure power outtages that happen, you have a back up way of keeping the pond warm. they aren't worth the trouble especially if there is a power outtage and your heater gets refrozen in the pond over night.

    7. Ponds are very soothing. Kind of like gardening for some. they are addicting however next thing you know you want a larger, better pond.

    8. Depending on the work you want to do, yes they can be very easy. some get very elaborate and complex. Depending on you.

    9. I am not so sure about s**y, since only humans can be s**y.

    10. yes you can use up lighting, down lighting and point lighting (highlighting) Underwater lights (usually LED) come with color coverings. this way you can highlight various items in and around the pond as well as show off your fish in the evening hours.

I live in PA and I have a number of ponds. We have basically the same type of weather. No problems with your pond
