I need potty training advice

I started potty training my son at 18 months, he is now 3 1/2, he will pee in the potty, most of the time, we do have a few slip ups. But he is refusing to do a "number 2" on the toilet. I've tried rewarding him with candy, money, new toys. And i have also punished him with a small spanking, time outs, and going to bed. He watches me or my husband use the bathroom so he knows what to do. He has 2 training potties, and a seat to put on the big potty, I am running out of ideas and dont know what else to do! How do i get him to sit and p**p on the potty?

  1. Stop punishing him. That is not going to help. He isn't avoiding pooping on the toilet to be bad.

Find a playgroup of some sorts (or preschool) that he wants to go to, then say they only take big boys who are potty trained, so as soon as he can p**p in the toilet he can go.

  2. The thing that worked for my son was new underwear (spiderman to be specific).. I told him that in order to be a superhero and wear superhero underwear he would have to use the potty every time he needs to go. He wanted to wear them really bad so he reluctantly went, but he realized that it wasn't so bad and we gave him LOTS of praise. He does it now, has only had a few accidents since and I those times were just a timing issue. Good luck and try not to get discouraged because he picks up on that and feels like he is failing you which actually may make him want to avoid the whole thing altogether.

  3. I had the same thing!! my Little girl is 3 now and got the hang out it about 4 months ago... You can spank your child and should so don'tt listen to that stuff.... The only thing that worked was to be firm and dont let up.... use your gut feeling on what you should do... you know your child better than anyone else... if knows he is go number 2 in the potty but doesnt ... spank his little butt.. he will give and he will go number 2 ...... you just dont give and keep it up.... use you heart and gut feels.....

  4. He's probably constipated b/c you started too early - - this is really common with boys.  Honestly, give it a break for a couple weeks and then start over--from scratch!  After 2 years of struggling with him he may have trained himself not to go on the potty which leads to constipation which leads to pain when going.  Number 2 is the hardest for them to get.  Stop training, give him a MILD stool softener (most docs recommend Miralax), wait a couple weeks for the soft stool to establish itself and then try again.

Also, spankings, time outs and going to bed are all counterproductive to potty training. Continue with rewarding positive aspects when he does go potty and gently, but firmly, correct him (words only) when he has an accident.  He will fear doing #2 even more if he knows he will get punished, especially for having an accident.

    Good LUck

  5. If he poops in his pants - make him clean it out... it worked with my nephew!!  He was so grossed out he never pooped in his pants again.
