  1. Stupidity comes to mind.

  2. Not only does someone take their hands off the steering wheel to use a cell, they will usually take their eyes off the road (not to mention their minds off driving) in order to find or dial a number - or (I c**p you negatory), to enter a text message.

A decent driver can either hold it in one hand, and drive with the other (I can drive almost the entire way to work in the morning using my legs to steer), or hold it with their shoulder.

Obviously the smart thing to do is to either get a hands free phone/set - they even make ones that you can say a name, and it will dial it for you.  This keeps you from having to take your eyes off the road, or your hands off the wheel.

Other options involve pulling over (safely) to use your cell phone, or letting people leave messages if you are on the road, and then calling them back when you get someplace safe.  Most conversations are not worth getting into a wreck over (I've watched at least one actual wreck where a girl on her cell smashed her Mustang into an old ladies Oldsmobile - darn near killing her).

On top of everything else - if you are having an in-depth conversation with someone while driving, then you don't have your mind on the road.  Your reaction time will drop considerably.  Combine that with someone sipping on hot coffee, eating, putting on makeup, fiddling with their radio or GPS - and it can be pretty scary to drive in traffic (especially on a motorcycle or bicycle - both of which I ride frequently).

  3. Using a cell phone,   the physical act of holding it to the ear calls ones attention to the phone,  distracting them from other tasks around them.   A person just naturally tends to focus on the phone,   and  most won't turn their head to check mirrors,  blind spots,  or around corners.

Using a hands free device moderates this some,   but not enough to declare cell phone driving safe.

  4. Why would the do something like that????
