  1. I think you should start studying for it using prep books and stuff at the minimum.  If you're aiming for a perfect score, take some prep classes. (that are reliable) :D

I heard that colleges look at SATs as a basic, must-needed component of your application.  I'm not sure about ACTs but most of the juniors that I know end up taking both.  It won't hurt to study WELL and take both; it'll make your application look more impressive.

  2. Both the SAT and ACT are equally evil.  I took SAT, so I don't know much about the other one.

I would MOST DEFINITELY take a prep course.  The SAT is very tricky, and if you go into it unprepared, you'll just be wasting the money you paid to take it.  I highly recommend Princeton Review.  They will teach you the basics you need to take the exam (just like any other prep), but they also have some very useful techniques that help you take the exam itself.  They teach you the predictable pattern of the SAT, how to see through each problem to get the answer, advanced Process of Elimination, and how the test writers think.  I took a Princeton Review course for the SAT and raised my score by almost 500 points.  I took one for GMAT and raised my score by 70 points (which placed me into the above average percentile).

If you can take a classroom Princeton Review course, go for it!  They are kinda pricey though.  Check them out at www.princetonreview.com.  Otherwise, buy a Princeton Review prep book and follow their advice, including using the online tools they link you to.

    Good luck!

  3. I would suggest you look at test prep books to get familiar with both tests first. I would recommend Princeton Review or Kaplan's review books. After you have a feel for both tests see which one suits you better (often some people do better on one of the two).  Then you could choose to either study for that test through review books alone or if you prefer you could take a prep class for it. The good news is that you have plenty of time over the summer to practice. Colleges require only one of the tests (your choice) but many students choose to take both the SAT and ACT to maximize their opportunities to score well. Good luck!
