im in volleyball. im a back row player because im not tall. that is just the way it works now. i am really upset tho because hitting in the front row is my passion. but im not gonna give up. just because my coach says i cant doesnt mean i wont try around other people. but he seems to not know how valuable i am. im a good passer and i listen. yet when he switches places around he never tells me to take the place of someone. and i just dont know why. it seems like that is always how i get treated. and i jsut dont know what to do. i dont mess up when i get the chance to show him what i got. i come throo. but im wondering if its because i dont complain. and he jsut thinks he can put me in when he needs me. what do you think?

  1. Sad to say, but not everyone can be a front row player...doesn't matter how passionate you are about it.  Like basketball, there's one thing you can't teach...HEIGHT.  Being "not tall" will cause blocking problems.  Accept your role on the team playing the back row and if you are a good hitter, the coach should be able incorporate some back row sets for you.

  2. Whatever you do, don't complain. Someone on my team complained about the same exact thing, except she was hitter and wanted to be back row. She complained a lot about it and she got kicked off the team. Don't complain.

I am in the same exact situation as you though. I am shorter, and have good ball control, so the coaches put me as setter. Let me tell you I HATE IT! I never get to start in a game, and I barely get to play. But I have to be setter, because next year the two main setters will be on varsity and I will be the old setter on the team. Just get over it. In practices show him everything you got, when you do hitting lines and stuff, do you best when the coach is watching.

Short people get the short end of the deal in volleyball I am afraid. I would know. =/

  3. I agree with old, not everyone is meant for front row.  Now, what you can do is try to get some back row hits so at least hit from the front.  Call it, tell the setter you want to try it.  For the coach situation, I think that you should give it some time.  I don't know if you a new player but if you are, that happens frequently with new players.  Try the back row.  Its an important part of volleyball.  Without back row players, who would help the setter set for the kill and make awesome digs?  You might be taking the back row for granted, but its very important!  The coach knows what he is doing or he wouldn't be the coach.  He probably thinks that you can help the team the most by playing back row.  Good Luck and I hope this helps!

  4. Try talking to your coach "before you die".

Communication should be part of your volleyball skills (and life essentials to a certain point), so take your chance and practice on that part. Don't just sit there and worry about how he "thinks" about you, go talk to him.
