alright this is my situation (im in highschool):

i do track in winter and spring but im a sprinter. now that soccer is starting im getting ready for that. every year during tryouts there is a 2 mile run. i ran my first ever 2 mile today (missed it last year) and i got 12 min. and 56 seconds. (distance was exactly 2.09 miles)

i told my friend who won the 2 mile last year that i would beat him this year: he got a 10 min. and 30 seconds last year.

i have until late august to beat him. (friendly competition)

what can i do to beat him? he's not running right now.

*nd for my 2 mile time... 1st mile: 5:19

2nd mile: 7:44

no workout is too tough for me. i ran 400m hurdles in the spring so i can physically push myself.

  1. wow, that is alot of time to take off. 10:30 is really fast for a girl, like nationals qualifying fast. What up have to do is probably take your first mile out in the same time as you did and then make your second mile 10seconds faster then your first. If you are running the race w/ him then just stick w/ him the whole time and sprint the last 400m. Personally as a distance and 400m running the 2mile is the hardest race of all and the 400m hurdles seem like a piece of cake in comparison. The fastest distance girl on my team trained all season for the 2mile and didnt get that fast, shes good too and always wins her races.. Good luck.

Edit: okay i thought you were a girl, that time is more realistic for a guy to reach.

  2. Make sure you're training hard.

And since your 1st and 2nd mile times are so different, I would run a practice 2 mile on the track and get your splits for each lap.

See which laps of yours are the slowest and really work on improving those during the race. Normally the 5th and 6th laps are the slowest.

    Good luck!

  3. PACE urself!

thats a big difference between times!

your 1st and 2nd mile time should be close together!

    soo not far apart.

to get better start to run for a longg time and a slower pace.

then work with the speed after that
