does the westell 327w router act as a wireless point of access?

what will i need to set up wireless internet in my room?

if it will be much cheaper where can i get at least a 20-25 foot Ethernet cord(about 5 feet longer then an xbox Ethernet cord)and a Ethernet card for that computer

i'm looking to get the cheapest equipment and i'm trying to keep it under at least 70 dollars and hopefully less

  1. Yes the Westell 327 router wil do what you want.  To setup the wireless in your room you need a computer with a wireless card if you're using a laptop most of the laptops from the last 3 or 4 years have them built in.  If you're using a desktop most desktops do not have wireless bulit in so you will need to buy a wireless card.  You pretty much have 2 main options with that.  If you're ok with opening the computer and installing it you can get a PCI wireless card (you want G by the way not B or N.  If you don't know what I mean you'll see it when you buy it)  Or you could simply buy a usb wireless card.  There are several usb cards available and of course this is the EASIEST option.  The usb cards that ar about 2 - 3 inches long are ok but this is going to depend on how far away your computer is from the router.   If you're a few rooms away or on a different floor it should work but your signal might be weak depending on where your computer is.  I have a linksys usb wireless adapter and it plugs into a usb cable and of course that plugs into the computer.   The nice thing about this adapter is because it's on a cable you can move it wherever you want as long as the cable reaches that way you can achieve the best signal to your router.  It also has an adjustable antenna so if you have it sitting on a table you can move the antenna to where you have the best signal.  I don't know where to tell you to get this linksys adapter because with all the new wireless-n networks now the wireless-g's are slowly fading away.  But, I can say from experience that this is probably your best option. I have a friend who has one of the regular usb stick style cards and they have a terrible signal with it they had to get a usb extention and sit it in the other room for it to actually work.  Also I have a PCMCIA cwireless card (those are for laptops) and it's terrible with signal too.  I added a link to it for you to see.which one I mean.  You can price them yourself and decide.  It should be under 40 or 50$$ depending on where you buy it.  Good luck!

  3. The westell versalink (327w) is a wireless router - that means that it is a point of access for wireless connectivity.

All you need is a telephone line if your service requires it, AT&T doesn't even need a telephone line to be installed here in Atlanta so I'm not sure if you need one or not, the sales department or whoever you spoke with at the ISP should be able to provide you with that information.  The modem is already wireless, so once you get it and set it up, all you have to do is connect your wireless devices.  You will need help finding out what the network key is, and the Internet Service Provider can help you with that.

You can get cheap ethernet cords from Best Buy or Wal-mart, or other places like that.  If it's not a high performance cord, you may encounter problems.  Usually if the cord is longer than 10 feet the connection isn't as good.

The service provider should have some sort of modem rebate specials going on.  With the 327, you get a modem and router all in one, so you dont have to buy any additional equipment.
