So im signed up to go to this freeskiing camp out in whistler but my parents are now having second thoughts. They keep on reading things about skiers dying or getting paralyzed and dont think its worth the money to risk that happening to me. I know that this is not to common and i would love it if someone could give me some stats on deaths/major injuries that have recently occured in freestyle. THANKS!!!

  1. In the US the Annual ski death rate is .7 per million skier visits. That stat includes snowboarding as well. With the average number of skiers in one year is 6.1 million per year in the US. That is less than 7 people all year. Keep in mind that 84% of deaths on the mountain come from pre existing conditions ie. heart attack. Get out there and ride. your safer in the hill than in your home.

  2. The National Ski Patrol does have some statistics, they are 3 years old, ask them. In general, a camp is the safest way to learn to do the pipe and rail and stunts. Most of the injuries are from someone trying to do these things without proper instruction and not using due caution.

Skiing and snowboarding in developed areas are quite safe, the extreme injuries reported are for news headlines. This is because the news is very slow. If you go without the camp training the risk is much higher. You could contact the camp in Whistler/Blackcomb and ask for the statistics from their camp for the past 3 years.  Go to camp, just take it easy, you'll walk away from every good landing.

  3. just dont go over the top with what you can handle and youll be fine

  4. uhh well idk where to find the stats but if its a camp im 100% positive anything you do there will be safe. if your parents are hesitant tell them to call the camp and talk to one of the managers or something. the worst injury ive seen in a while would be tanner hall casing that one jump. he broke both his ankles, but i doubt youll be doing anything like that.

  5. Fatalities - According to the National Ski Areas Association (NSAA): During the past 10 years, about 38 people have died skiing/snowboarding per year on average. During the 2004/2005 season, 45 fatalities occurred out of the 56.9 million skier/snowboarder days reported for the season. Thirty of the fatalities were skiers (39 male, 6 female) and 15 of the fatalities were snowboarders (14 male, 1 female). The rate of fatality was .80 per million skier/snowboarder visits.

Note: A skier/snowboarder visit represents one person visiting a ski area for all or any part of a day or night and includes full-day, half-day, night, complimentary, adult, child, season and any other ticket types that gives one the use of an area's facility.

Serious Injuries - Serious injuries (paraplegics, serious head and other serious injuries) occur at the rate of about 42 per year, according to the NSAA. In the 2004/05 season, there were 45 serious injuries. Twenty-four of these serious injuries were skiers (18 males, 6 females) and 21 were snowboarders (19 males, 2 females). The rate of serious injury in 2004/05 was .80 per million skier/snowboarder visits.

    Hope this Helps

  6. Skiing is just like riding in an airplane - you see it on the news whenever a plane crashes or somebody dies skiing.  But of course you never see on the news "Flight 39 from Baltimore landed safely - film at 11!", and likewise you never really hear about the millions of people who go skiing each year and don't hurt themselves.

Keep your head on straight.  Don't try to advance too terribly quickly.  If you hurt yourself a little bit, call it a day, rather than risk exacerbating the injury or getting yourself a new one.  You'll be fine.

As far as the injury bit, I smacked my head pretty hard, and like a good boy went and sat out for 2 hours.  Then I got stupid and thought I could go back out.  On the second run I broke my arm.  I don't even remember falling, just "hey, how did I end up on the ground?  Whoa, my arm really hurts!".  Stupid.
