I need software/drivers for a Sony Handycan. Any help?

I own a Sony Handycam DCR-HC18E (link below) and have had EXTREME trouble installing it. I link up my Handycam to the laptop via a USB link, and then select USB Steam from the menu.

When I open up My Computer, I do not see my hardware. I have tried TONS of drivers and different software to pick up my cam, but none work.

The only software that had any success was the software provided, Picture Package, but this ripped the files off, mixed them up, added rubbish music, and then gave it back to me.

Apart from that, nothing else has even picked it up.

If anyone actually KNOWS anything that works, drivers or software, please let me know, as it is imperative that I can get my videos onto the computer.

Normally, drivers are bundled with the operating system OS, but most possibly, a USB connection is not compatible w/ your set-up

DCR-HC18E, a miniDV vcam, must be DV~Firewire400**-connected to pc to upload video thru video capture or video editing* application while vcam is ON PLAYBACK.  Before cable purchase** check PC for DV port {VCAM@4pin=>firewireCABLE=>PC@4/ 6pin?}. If none, install firewire card: pci for pc or pcmcia / express card for laptop.

Your problem is the connection between the camcorder and your laptop.

If you have a mini dv (cassette) camcorder….

Your dv camcorder needs a firewire connection (ieee 1394) in order to download video, your laptop probably did not come with a firewire port, so you will have to buy one and install it, (make sure your laptop has an empty bay) since most computers (except possibly brand new) don't come with a firewire port, your camcorder did not come with a firewire cord so you have to purchase a cord too. Your camcorder did come with a USB cord and that is used for downloading stills from your camcorder. Make sure your camera is in playback mode.

The fine print in your manual makes reference to firewire (ieee 1394) connection.
