I am trying out for the basketball team for my school. I have been in it once before but only because they didn't have enough people and they went to netball players. But now heaps of people are trying out and I really want to make it in but I am not very good at it, I used my netball skills last time.

Do you have any advice you can give me so I can make the team =)

  1. What position do you play? Any practice will help go shoot hoops and try and find some pick up games.

  2. Start with understanding the rules of the game.

First and foremost. concentrate on improving your stamina because it is the core of the game. Just start running around a 400 m track. Start with a single round and gradually increase the rounds as the days progress and finally come to a position where you can 10 rounds continuously. Do some  5-10 100m sprint sessions. Then do some steps and skipping to build your calf muscles which helps you to attain a good jump. Just keep aside a day in the week for this stamina improvement training.

Dribbling is the other area you need to concentrate. Try to dribble as much as you can in a day. You can dribble while watching TV, listening to songs etc. Don't just concentrate on a single hand. Try to give both hands equal power to dribble because in the game situations may arise where you will need to shift sides when the defense attacks your natural dribbling side. Golden rule: Never ever look at the ball while you dribble.

Shooting is another skill you need. As dribbling try to take as much shots as you can in a day. First start with board shots and once you feel you feel your fingers have enough power, increase the distance from the ring. Golden rule: Never use you palm, perfect your action and follow through.

Juggling skills is another key area. Once you are confident in your dribbling you can start juggling exercises like back hand passes, between the leg dribble hand changes,  behind the back dribble hand changes etc.

Finally, practice good passing skills and and fast moves.

  3. Practise dribbling and remember that it is a non-contact sport.

You will need to be very fit as it is a very fast sport.

Your netball skills will come in very handy though - avoid using an overhead pass - it is discouraged in basketball because many of the players are so tall...still to chest, shoulder and bounce passes.

    Good luck.

  4. run while dribble with the ball, shoot well, defend good, try to steal, but to be honest, i dont rly know the british rules caz im from the us and i dont if you guys use the FIBA rules.

  5. practise allot

dribbling with a mini basketball will help

  6. Get in really good physical shape. Get out there and run every couple of days. And work on your dribbling for at least an hour a day.
