  1. The best block play involves three things-blocks, imagination, and enough time to really be engaged in building. Provide a large set of classic unit blocks and enough room to build. Be prepared to ask open ended questions such as "What do you think would happen if you put that block on this one", or "We're out of the long blocks. What blocks could you use to fill in the same space?". Add some small props as the building gets more sophisticated. Hang pictures of interesting buildings on the wall of the block area. Add real materials such as pieces of PVC pipe or rocks, or scraps of fabrics , scarves and old vacuum cleaner hoses.

    Unit Blocks (Wooden/foam)

Balancing- Have the children arrange a row of blocks, balanced on top of long rectangle blocks.  Have children compare how many they were able to balance to incorporate counting and more/less.

Jack Be Nimble- Use a short cylinder on top of a sqare and act out the nursery rhyme.

Fill the Letter- Outline the letter L on the floor with masking tape. Ask your children to guess how many blocks it will take to fill up the letter. Have them try it and find out.  Do with other letters.

Make a Pattern:  Use the unit blocks to make a simple pattern on the floor.  Have the children repeat and continue the pattern.

Build This- Build a simple block strucutre with five or six blocks. Ask the children to make a structure that look just like it.  As their skills increase, build the structure and have teh children study it, then collapse it before they begin building an identical structure.

Create a block building book:  Take pictures or have teh children draw their creation and have them dictate.  Put the photo and their story on paper...laminate or simply 3 hole punch and put in border.

    Themes and Props:

Transportation:  hang up pictures about transportation. Provide cars, trucks, boats etc.  Include toy people and cargo for transporting.

Farm:  Hang up farm pictures.  Toy people and farm animals.

    Hope this helps.

  3. Kids can build with Legos (big or little), train sets, wooden blocks with cars and trucks, and things like that. I have also given the kids tools (plastic ones), nuts and bolts (real ones), and plastic animals to play with. Is this what you are looking for?

  4. tell them to make their house or school or some building

  5. Add plastic animals, cars, barns for animals nearby the blocks and they'll select what they require.

    Build a tower around them.

Build a farm with blocks and animals - here's a song you can use while building it:

we are/ I am building up a farm

I am building up a farm

I      am       building      up    a    farm

    boys come and help us

    girls come and help us

    building up a farm.

repeat until they begin building then gradually leave them to it.

  6. just provide the blocks -they will provide the activities - occasionally put out something different to go with the blocks - vehicles, farm animals, construction, etc.
