I'm doing my first math assignment of the year and it has to do with PEMDAS. Of course I''ve already learned about what it means and how to do a problem, but it kinda slipped out during the summer. Can anyone give me a good explanation of how to do a problem using PEMDAS, an explanation that a 12 year old would understand? just simple but something that will help me remember how to do it. ( I'm not talking about " Please excuse my dear aunt sally " )

Try my first problem

12-3(4)

give me the answer with steps of how you did it please! Im not copying, just trying to get it.

  1. that's so easy! you are talking about please excuse my dear aunt sally, but what it is is a step by step way to solve math problems (please excuse my dear aunt sally is a way to remember it). its actually parenthesis, exponents, multiplication, division, adding, subtracting. so you look for those things in a problem and you do them in that order

  2. In this probably using PEMDAS you always work the parenthesis first so you start with the -3(4) which would be -12 because the -3 is right by the 4 so you multiply.  so that leaves you with 12-12 which is 0. hope that helped!

  3. Well, this is quite simple since I am in Adv. Algebra/Trig now.

alright, what you do is write down PEMDAS(it always helps me) like this:

    Parenthesis

    Exponents

    Multiply

    Divide

    Add

    Subtract

So lets go over your problem.

    12-3(4)

Now you just go down the list.

Is there any Parenthesis? Yes. Lets solve that...Wait, its just a number. So you go to the next step.

Is there any Exponents? No. Lets go to the next step.

Now, do we multiply? Yes, we do. 3 times 4 is 12.

So your new equation is 12-12

Of course you could keep going down the list and asking yourself if there's anymore, but now you just skip the next steps all the way to subtract.

    and your answer is 0.

I hope i made sense, if you'd like more help. Feel free to contact me :]

  4. for ur prob ur do parentheses first so u do -3(4) which is -12 so 12-12 would be so 0 so the answer to ur prob is 0

    P.E.M.D.A.S=parentheses.exponent.multi...

    subtraction

  5. multiply 3 x 4 = 12

    so 12 - 12 = 0

  6. PEMDAS stands for Parenthesis, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction. so basically you just solve a multi-operation (has more than just one thing being multiplied, divided, added, or subtracted) in order using PEMDAS.

so, for example, with 12-3(4), you would multiply 3x4=12 and then you replace 3(4) with it's answer, 12. so your new equation would be 12-12=0.

PEMDAS just tells you what order to do the equation in.

    here's another example: 100/2 - 2³ + 8(4) x 3

(100/2 means 100 divided by two. i dont have a "divided by" symbol)

so, following PEMDAS, this is what you'd do:

    Parenthesis: 8(4)=32

    new equation: 100/2 - 2³ + 32 x 3

    Exponents: 2³=8

    new equation: 100/2 - 8 + 32 x 3

    Multiplication: 32x3=96

    new equation: 100/2 - 8 + 96

    Division: 100/2=50

    new equation: 50 - 8 + 96

    Addition: 8+96=104

    new equation: 50 - 104

    Subtraction: 50-104=-54

    so the answer is -54.

(sorry, i dont know if you learned negative numbers yet. that wasn't a very good example.)

    hope this helps. :)

  7. Here is your question:

    12-3(4)

First we multiply 3 and 4

    Which equals 12

    Then you minus it

    12-12

And there you go,  your answer is 0

Good luck with the rest of your homework

  8. 12-3(4)=

    multiply 3 and 4

    12-12=

        =0

  9. I think of it this way:

    Parenthesis

    Exponents

    Multiplication Division

    Addition Subtraction

This is the order in which math problems should be solved.  If there are parenthesis, do everything in them first.  Next do the exponents, then multiplication and division from left to right, then addition and subtraction from left to right.

So with the problem you gave, there are two operations needed:  subtraction and multiplication.  Multiplication is higher in the list, so you do that first.

    3 x 4 = 12

    Now do the subtraction:

    12 - (12) = 0 so the answer is 0.

If you didn't follow the order of operations (pemdas)and did the subtraction first  you would get 36 because 12-3 =9 and 9 x 4=36  This would be an incorrect answer because the problem was done in the wrong order.  Following the order of operations means everyone can do the same problem the same way and get the same answer every time.

  10. P- Parentheses

    E- Exponents

    M- Multiply

    D- Divide

    A- Add

    S- Subtract

With P.E.M.D.A.S., you go in order, look to see if there is anything in parentheses like (3+5), then u do exponents so 3 to the 2nd power is 9, then u multiply or divide, it doesn't matter with those 2 which one you do 1st, then same with adding and subtracting

    so  12-3(4)

    3 times 4 = n

    then 12 minus n = your answer

  11. multiply first...3 times 4 is 12.  Now subtract..12 minus 12 is zero
