Ok I have 4 tortoises and 2 turtles and I'm worried about them. First off my two youngest tortoises have soft shells and they have been releasing this white cream that isn't p**p and I don't think it's pee. Does anyone know what it is??? And my turtles also have soft shells. What do I do? Is there something wrong with them? Please answer! ASAP

  1. ok the white stuff is urates it is what the tortoise wees, a tortoise does not produce urine like we do they hold on to 90% of their water for use in times of drought so the white stuff is just uric acid crystals and is normal, as for the soft shell try feeding more calcium, a cuttle bone grated over the food or a good calcium supplement over the food twice a week will do them a world of good, make sure your uv bulb is still working they only last about 6 months before they need replacing and it is essential for a tortoise or turtle to have them to help absorb calcium and digest their food.

  2. take it to the vet ASAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!...

  3.   The white cream is bad. She needs more water maybe a bath. Ok its not realy bad, what it is,  is that she thinks a dry season may be coming so she is conserving water so when she pee it lacks most of the reg make up of urine giving it a white color. So if it happens regulure try to give her very shallow baths and poor water over her, luke warm so not to hurt her. Also mist her food

  4. The white creamy stuff is urates and is normall and essential.  Tortoise of any age or size should not have soft shells after just a few days from hatching.  However, they are more delicate than the older totoises as their shells do thicken slightly with age.

If you have a tortoise with a sotf shell, it may well have shell rot which needs immediate attention from a vet.

    Good Luck

  5. I'm not a expert but i have 2 tortoises and i think the white stuff is normal but the soft shells don't sound right?

  6. It would really help to know more about your situation, like species, size, diet, etc. Otherwise, we are just guessing.

Softshell is usually the result of a bad diet, over a long time. For example, if your main food is lettuce, the tortoise is not getting enough calcium, D3, or other essential elements in the diet.

White urates are a form of urine, and sort of (but not really) normal for some species, but a terrible sign for others. In most tortoises it signals that the animal is badly dehydrated.

I hate to say it, but it sounds like all of your animals have been getting some bad care. You might need a vet's help at this point to get things put right again, but a couple good sites to start with would include:

    Tortoises-

  7. First of all baby tortoises are born with soft shells, if you give it lots of grasses and clovers, NO Iceberg lettuce, then the shell will even out if u give them grass and clovers and dandelion leaves each day in addition to what u feed them now. for a very long time. they should grow up big and strong. And the white stuff is normal it's a substance that they excrete with pee. If your turtles R about as big as a half dollar then the soft shell is normal, if they R much bigger then try to get them to eat some vegetation and the shells will toughen up. Hope I help and Good Luck

    =D
