I'm really considering joining. I just need advice from the women that are in it instead of the recruiters. If you could tell me anything about it: good or bad experiences, years of enlistment, when you get done, what it's like....I just need everything. so if you could email me back and forth that would be great. ji.barrera@yahoo.com or just reply to this

  1. Since you have a major in mass communications, you do not want to come in active duty in either the Navy or the Air Force as an enlisted servicewoman. If you have a degree you need to go Officer. And do not let them tell you otherwise. I refuse to watch a good young man or woman who has college come into the service with out being told their options. What you want to do, if you do decide to go Navy is look into the OCS programs (Officers Candidate School) or the NROTC program (Naval Reserves Officers Training...something like that, I have to look it up again). Or you can look into Annapolis. And you want to look for a Rate or designation that is geared more toward Cryptologic Communications, Information Systems, or Operations. You'll get paid more, you'll be treated with more respect, and you'll see the difference in how you're treated as an officer vs. enlisted. Do you know any programming languages? What is your back ground with TCP/IP Networking, or Information Systems Security? You already have an advantage over the average Seaman or Airman walking in off the street looking for a job with the Navy/Air Force (which in my opinion is the best branches of the service for any woman to chose). So do not let the recruiters make you think that they only have enlisted jobs open for you. They have quotas they have to meet. They’re not worried about you getting a good job that will carry over into the civilian Sector.

The Navy was good for me. I did 10 years as a Crypotlogic Technicians Operator, or Information Systems Technician (Sounds fancy huh?) My main job was ship to shore satellite communications, secure circuitry, network configurations and management, and information systems security. The training and schooling I received while active duty Navy is what helped me land my job in the Information Technology field. Not to mention the places I’ve been and the countries I’ve lived in (Japan for example) so I’m glad I joined. I separated because I was ready to try my hand at breaking into becoming a screen play writer/author. And you can’t do that while you on a 6 month deployment on the “USS NEVERDOCK” (a little Navy humor).  Next time you talk to your recruiter, ask him/her about the officer programs that you qualify for. DO NOT GO ENLISTED IF YOU HAVE YOUR DEGREE! I can’t stress that enough.

  2. From my observation (I'm a man in the Air Force, 12 years) .. women get treated better and live in better conditions in the Air Force than in the Navy
