  1. I just posted this on any guy's question regarding shortboard size...I think it applies here too:

This really depends on your experience in the water and surfing in general. Likewise, your weight plays a big part too.

Thus, consider the following in this order:

    - Your experience in the water

    - Your overall height, weight

    - What board you might want to add to your quiver next (always think one board ahead...)

    - Where you will be surfing it (beach break, point break, etc.)

    - Wearing a wetsuit, boardshorts, etc.

    - Boards thickness, width, etc.

From there, I would really advise talking to a local shaper and start some dialog with your buddies or other people around that you surf with. If you are a beginner, go longer, thicker and wider and you will have more fun. Likewise, if you are more advanced, you can narrow it out, go thinner, etc. to get a more responsive board.

As reference, I am 6'1'' and my everyday shortboard is a 6'6'', but its fairly wide (19 1/4) and fairly thick (2 5/8). Thats what works for me.  But, I have many boards that range in size from 6'0'' to 7'10'' depending on conditions.  Most of my shortboards are 2 5/8 inches thick+ and 19+ inches wide.

Oh, and don't buy a board from Costco....here is why:  If you are a beginner surfer, everyone in the water is gonna know it.  Your job to to not be in everyone's way while you figure out how to get the basics down.  Having a "pop-out" board from Costco, etc. is just going to draw another evil eye.  Besides, as you may come to find out, surfers tend not to like the thought of "pop-outs" in general.  Thus, leave the Costco board at Costco, get a bit more respect from those in the water and get some waves when one comes your way.....

Check out www.swaylocks.com, SurferMag.com message board, etc. if you need more info.....or talk to a local shaper about your needs/desires.

  2. long boards are for smaller waves, short boards are for bigger waves. you're tall, so i would get a long board, about 6'9 is good for you. i can tell from experience

  3. The correct answer would be: what ever board you can get up on...

Really though, the board you choose is connected more to how long you have been surfing and what kind of waves you have.  If you are new to surfing and riding waves up to 6 feet, I would say go with a Cadillac (Long-board...).  You can get them for pretty cheap from Costco.  Cheap is good for a new surfer; because, you are either going to lose it, or break it.

    Shaka!
