  1. Begin reading to him every day.  Select picture books that interest him.  A four-year old usually doesn't have the attention span to listen to chapter books read aloud. Let him pick them out.

Work on developing his fine motor skills.  This will help him learn to write.  Here are some suggestions for developing his fine motor skills and hand strengh: you can cut pictures out of magazines, draw simple shapes and have him color and cut them out,  try lacing cards (remember the ones we had in kindergarten that were a picture and you laced around the edges), puzzles, drawing with crayons, pencils, markers etc....legos, play-do etc...those are all things that encourage hand strengh development.  The "monkey" bars at the playground also encourage grip strengh.

Work on recognizing and naming colors.  There are lots of games out there that will help him do this if he can't already.  Play alphabet games.  Count objects.  Start with 1-5.

Finally teach him to recognize and write his name. You can do lots of fun activities with his name.   Cut the letters and  let him put them in order, glue bits of paper into the outline of his name, paint it with dot markers or blow pens.  To write it I'd start by tracing then copying it.  Use a variety of writing instruments.

Workbooks are fine, they'll teach him the ability to concentrate on a paper/pencil assignment, but stretch out beyond them.  Check out this website:

Lakeshore sells educational materials and toys.  They can be a bit expensive, but it'll give you good ideas.

that's one of many or go to your local shopping center and buy some pre k workbooks.

  3. Go to the library or local book store and pick out some simple Chapter books, and a few picture books. If your son is 4, then it's good to challenge him with harder books, rather than picture books. He might enjoy the Bailey Tree Kids, Junie B. Jones, etc.

Buy a few workbooks from Staples, Barnes & Nobles, etc. There should be a good variety of basic kindergarten math, Reading Comprehension, Spelling, etc.
