I have a beta fish i bought it pretty much 24 hours ago. He started to eat at the very beginning but now that i put him in the new tank he hasn't eaten. I know I read something about bettas not eating until they are used to the tank but how long does that take? Also, my tank keeps on getting cloudy i have washed it twice today. The first time i left food in it but the second time i dont know why, i read something since it was a new tank, but i dont know, also i left one pellet, can that little thing cloud up the entire tank eventually? I am worried that if i keep taking him in and out of the tank he is going to die because of shock or whatever. Please reply, thanks.

  1. the reason for your tank going cloudy is due to having  no filter so the waste as in poo that he does and food not being eaten will make the water go cloudy get a filter and also enlarge your tank for him

  2. Well, half gallon is to small. The minimum for a betta is 1 gallon, large is better. If you hook up a disposable filter then that will keep that tank from getting cloudy. You also need to cycle the tank. It can take a week tops to get used to a new tank. But he really needs at least a gallon. If your room temp drops below 75F you also need a small heater. The hydro mini aquarium heater is a good one. Bettas are exteamy active fish if given a proper enviornment.  Their color is also better if there is a heater and small filter.

  3. You should really put him in a larger tank - he'll love the extra space, and you can operate a small filter to help keep his water clean. Don't put a filter in such a small tank, though - it'll create too much current and cause stress. Additionally, cycling a tank smaller than 5 gallons isn't a good idea and can be dangerous.

Be careful about giving him too much food if he isn't eating. Use a net to skim the uneaten food out of the tank. This will rot and could be causing your cloudiness.

Did you rinse all of his accessories? Gravel, plants, everything?

Since you've moved him around a lot, it's a good idea to give him a break. You're probably stressing him out a bit and this could make him sick. Wait a day or two, get a larger tank, and then move him over; you can also try leaving him in there alone with only water (to begin with), to see if cloudiness reoccurs.

  4. To be happy and healthy a betta really needs a 5 gallon tank with heater and filter.  A half gallon is too small for anything to live in.  The ammonia build up would be toxic in a matter of hours.
