I need some advice on my career path. I am currently an IT recruiter for insurance and financial industry. I have been doing it for about 2 years. I have my BA degree.

I am trying to get in marketing and advertising.

I have been applying for assistant role... my question is that is it impossible for me to get into that industry or do i need to go get another degree in marketing?

  1. It sounds like you're pretty early in your career -- we recommend first trying to break into the new field without getting another degree, and if you're unsuccessful, you can go ahead and get the second degree if you need help. Potential advanced degrees that would really help you in this area: an MBA if you're more interested in the business side, or a art or copywriting degree from somewhere like Miami Ad School (one of the best) if you're more interested in the creative side.  Their url: http://www.miamiadschool.com/

However, you'd be surprised how many different ways you can get into advertising and marketing. Our recommendation: don't try to start in the assistant role. There's a common misconception that you need to slowly work your way up at a company...it's just not true anymore. With 2 years of experience in recruiting, you could easily say that you have 2 years of experience marketing your services to IT companies to try to get them to hire you, marketing your services to candidates to try to get them to send you their resumes, and marketing the individual candidates to your existing IT clients.

We recommend rewriting your resume to emphasize the marketing aspects of what you have done. Have you ever written any of the job specs? That's a lot like writing ad copy or a marketing brochure. Have you ever placed an ad for one of your open positions? Ever gone out on a marketing pitch? Ever staffed a booth at a recruiting/job fair?  All of this can be positioned as marketing work.  We did a very quick search, and here are three examples of jobs you could apply for:
