Question:

I need some common beliefs about global warming?

I've got to write a paper on the opinions and common beliefs og global warming.

Anything you know would be helpful, or just some articles that simply explain some ways of defining it as being fact or fiction in your own opinion.

Thanks.

  1. If the word common means, as it does in a mathematical sense, that all people believe this, then there are no common beliefs.

If you intend common in the colloquial sense meaning widespread, then we have:

The earth would be much colder but for a greenhouse effect.

The most significant component of the greenhouse effect is water vapour.

The amount of water vapour in the atmosphere is a function mostly of the temperature locally,

The amount of  water vapour globally is not based on the average temperature over the whole world. It is much more heavily influenced by high temperatures than by low temperatures.

Cloud cover and snow on the ground act in the opposite direction compared to greenhouse effect.

Cloud cover is reduced as temperature rises.. that is, the length of time that cloud cover persists is lower as temperature rises,

As global temperature rises, we get more water vapour in the air, more rainfall, more snow, more wind, and more powerful winds.

The reduced cloud cover that comes with higher temperature tends to produce more severe drought as the sun bakes the moisture out of the soil.

Forest fires are more significant when we have drought and warmer weather.

Crops which are dependent on steady watering may fail if we have drought. and even having limited rainfall may produce major food shortages.

The Great lakes are losing a lot of water because of lower precipitation because of warming.

This last belief appears widespread despite the fact we have not had lower precipitation.

  2. Here's a site which lists 26 myths about global warming, and the scientific reasons why they're wrong.

  3. A. Scientists have determined that a number of human activities are contributing to global warming by adding excessive amounts of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere. Greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide accummulate in the atmosphere and trap heat that normally would exit into outer space.

    Greenhouse Gases and Global Warming

While many greenhouse gases occur naturally and are needed to create the greenhouse effect that keeps the Earth warm enough to support life, human use of fossil fuels is the main source of excess greenhouse gases.

By driving cars, using electricity from coal-fired power plants, or heating our homes with oil or natural gas, we release carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping gases into the atmosphere. Deforestation is another significant source of greenhouse gases, because fewer trees means less carbon dioxide conversion to oxygen.

During the 150 years of the industrial age, the atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide has increased by 31 percent. Over the same period, the level of atmospheric methane has risen by 151 percent, mostly from agricultural activities such as raising cattle and growing rice.

    The Consequences of Global Warming

As the concentration of greenhouse gases grows, more heat is trapped in the atmosphere and less escapes back into space. This increase in trapped heat changes the climate and alters weather patterns, which may hasten species extinction, influence the length of seasons, cause coastal flooding, and lead to more frequent and severe storms.

Try these. There's a lot of good info here.

  5. Al Gore is a idiot is a common one on that topic.

  6. Global warming is one-half of the climatic cycle of warming and cooling.

The earth's mean temperature cycles around the freezing point of water.

This is a completely natural phenomenon which has been going on since there has been water on this planet. It is driven by the sun.

Our planet is currently emerging from a 'mini ice age', so is

becoming warmer and may return to the point at which Greenland is again usable as farmland (as it has been in recorded history).

As the polar ice caps decrease, the amount of fresh water mixing with oceanic water will slow and perhaps stop the thermohaline cycle (the oceanic heat 'conveyor' which, among other things, keeps the U.S. east coast warm).

When this cycle slows/stops, the planet will cool again and begin to enter another ice age.

It's been happening for millions of years.

The worrisome and brutal predictions of drastic climate effects are based on computer models, NOT CLIMATE HISTORY.

As you probably know, computer models are not the most reliable of sources, especially when used to 'predict' chaotic systems such as weather.

    Global warming/cooling, AKA 'climate change':

    Humans did not cause it.

    Humans cannot stop it.

  8. here are the most common beliefs about global nowarming.

    1. its a phony issue

    2. it is a vehicle to tax you more.

    3. it is a vehicle to limit your movements

    4. albert gore makes millions from it despite polluting the good earth to death with his 10k sq foot home and private jet and big suv.

    5. even though the supporters cry out on this subject, they do almost nothing to stop it on their own. they drive cars, the heat their homes, run the a/c when its too hot, flush toilets and pollute the water supply, use paper products, and fill landfills with their garbage.

    6. the global warming crowd are hypocrites, but talk a really good line.

  9. the only fact that is and has been proved about this whole business is that the earth has always been changing even before humans , so to say  man made global warming is lack of intelligence

  10. The paranoid play a huge role in G.W. Just ask a grade school kid if he or she believes in global warming after seeing Al Gore’s movie. Paranoid teachers, paranoid kids, and paranoid adults will tell you the planet is overheating because the U.S.A. is at fault.

China has sidestepped this process and seems to be exempt even though they are Industrializing up the ying yang. The polar bears are drowning, even though they have been known to swim for a hundreds miles. Fact: In 2008 the ice caps expanded, and record low temperatures were recorded across the entire northern hemisphere.

CO2 is believed to cause warming of our atmosphere even though the ratio of is 1: 38,000 of CO2 to air! All you have to do is show a picture of the planet Venus to the kids then tell them that this will happen to Earth. The fact is that  the surface temperature of Venus is hot enough to melt lead and its distance from the sun is much closer.

Everyone should do their part to conserve energy by buying these energy saving light bulbs, use less water, and drive less.

Fact: That each one of these ways to conserve energy might cause problems with pricing, because we have a supply and demand style global market. Cutting back on water consumption has been known to raise your water bill because the government claims that they did not collect enough money on taxes. And to, buy these energy saving light bulbs not only put the consumer at risk if any of these new bulbs breaks mercury is released into the air, but they are also expensive to buy and give off little light to boot.
