I live in a small, one bedroom apartment. I've got a couch and a coffee table in my living room but I have this awkward space, I think of it as a small dining room and I have no idea what to do with it. Sorry, I don't know the measurements but I'd say it's about the length of o2 to 2 1/2 love seats and the width of one love seat. It's pretty narrow but far wider than a hallway. I have no idea what to put in there. I don't want another couch and it's too small to make it into a sitting room but then again I don't want a big table in there because I'd never use it plus it cramps the space up. I'd really appreciate any ideas!

  1. How about a desk or office area.  Maybe an area for potted plants.  Or even a bar or high top small table with 2 chairs or stools.

  2. For furniture go to www.funkythings.co.uk

    They have fab stuff there

  3. put a big mirror...it will make the room look bigger

  4. I wish I could see the area and the placement of this area.  Is it adjacent to a kitchen or what not.  You could put a book shelf or some sort of table for two with chairs.  It depends on what you have there and the size of the rest of your home.  I'm a real estate agent, and I can give you all kinds of ideas if I could have seen the area.  Perhaps turning it into a small dining area or adding a book case, like I've said gives you storage and you can add plants and what not to make it feel more like home.

  5. With such a small place as a one bedroom apartment.....you really should make the most of this space.

This is what I would do.

Have someone make you some chairs.  The chairs should be boxes on rollers.  The boxes could be used as chairs for dining....or rolled up against the wall for storage.  The lid for the boxes should be two lids.  The back lid should be able to stay up as the 'back' of the chair with the second lid serving as the seat on the storage boxes.

When not using the room... simply turn the chairs back to back in the center of the room as a sort of a lounge/storage area.

Then.... You should have a collapesable table.  These can be purchased at K-Mart or Wal-Mart.  This table can be used for projects... to make a home office.... or to use as a dining table when needed.

On one wall... I would go vertical with some shelving.  The shelving should reach from floor to ceiling so that you maximize storage space.  Cover this shelving with a bright colored fabric curtain.  Use sticky velcro to attach the fabric to the shelving to hide all the stuff on the shelf and to minimize dust.....when the curtains get dirty ...simply take the velcro tabs off  .... take them down and put them into the washer and dryer.

The fabric should be a lighter or brighter color to keep the room from looking like a 'small tomb'.

Another trick to make the room look bigger is to paint a horizontal line around the room at eye level.  Also ....adding one row of small mirrors around the room would do the same thing....even if you do this on just one side it will make the room look bigger.

I dont like the idea of mirrors, but....in an apartment I doubt that you are allowed to paint....so mirrors might be a better option.

Is there a window in the room?  If so, make a cornice above the window at the ceiling.  Then ...hang some bright colored fabric that will reach from the cornice to the floor.  This will add 'height' to the room as well.

The observers eye should go from ceiling to floor in this room to make sure the room doesn't appear cramped, dark, or small.

    Hope this helps a bit.

  6. it is probebly suppose to be some sort of dining room area. you can buy a small 4 seat table for there... whether you use it, dont matter, it will make the space look good or if you have company, you have a place to play cards, have drinks/conversation, or lay snacks on...
