Rats should never be kept alone; they do much better and have much more fun in pairs or more.  This being said, the absolute minimum size cage for two rats is 4 cubic feet in volume.  Bigger is even better!  Keep in mind the most important size in the rat's cage is surface area.  Putting hammocks, ladders, levels, tunnels, nest boxes, and other climby things in the cage will make it feel bigger than it is.

  3. First of all, please don't keep a single rat. It's very unfair to them as rats are highly social creatures and should always be kept in same s*x pairs or groups.

  4. Well, for a start, it's better to get two rats.

    But as for size, this is the only size I'd be comfortable letting a customer go home with, and I would have to refuse a sale if they had anything smaller...
