I babysit my two cousins all the time and it seems that we normally have nothing to do!! They're both girls and are 4 (almost 5 in October) and 2.

They love helping out. Last Monday, they were both sick and I babysat them while their parents were at work. I was bored and they were watching TV so I got up and started to wash dishes in the kitchen (the kitchen and living room are hooked together, separated by a bar) and the both came in wanting to help! So, I gave both of them a wash cloth and gave the older one the breakable dishes and the younger one the plastic ones and they dried them. That went well and their dad was so surprised when he came in to see us washing dishes! We also clean the oldest one's room (the younger one still sleeps in her parent's room) and she loves that.

The oldest one loves coloring and drawing, and they both love dolls and playing with the toy kitchen. She (the oldest one) also loves makeup, but I try to avoid that since it's so messy and the younger one will want to play with it, too, and it just goes downhill from there.

Also, my cousins share a backyard with the house behind them and there are normally dogs running around in the yard so the backyard isn't always an option.

Any tips are appreciated!!

  1. I know my 4, 6, & 2 yr old niece and nephews love to help me bake cookies or a cake (even cooking lunch or dinner), painting/drawing/colouring, reading, playing with blocks/lego

  2. My two year old daughter loves when we build forts out of pillows, blankets and chairs and stuff like that.  It is so much fun.

  3. the wii trust me

or just do what me and my brothers did, play with dirt

  4. Bake some cookies and have them help (we used slice and bake style to make it easier).  Make some playdoh together and play with it.

Hang blankets up over chairs to make "caves" and play any pretend game with them.  Read to them.  Make up stories together and let them "illustrate" them.  Use pudding to do finger painting.  Make macaroni necklaces. Put on music and let them dance. Make dolls out of old socks or wooden spoons and let them play with them.

Have fun, you sound like a great sitter!
