I need some gardening tips and some ideas on what to plant

Question

Im going to start my veggie garden this week. what should i plant and what do i need to do to get the soil ready? your personal opinion i dont want websites thanks....btw i like in So Cal so its pretty warm

You can still put in lots of things.  For seeds, you can plant basil.  This is the perfect time to put in green beans, lima beans, pinto beans, beets, broccholi,  Brussels sprouts, carrots, cauliflower, celery, and collards.  You can plant one last crop of corn or squash or start cucumbers, sunflowers and okra at this time, but you will need to do this by the end of the month.  Kale is good to put in now, as is sage.  You can start lettuce, peas, spinach and onions in September.

You can also go to your local garden center and buy bedding plants.  What they have on display is likely a good candidate for planting at this time of year.  Try to amend your soil by digging down at least 12" and mix in some compost and deodorized manure.

Depending on your planting zone... August is a good month to start or replant, Bush beans, cucumbers, and summer squash. Beets, broccoli, carrots, potatoes, lettuce and other cool-season crops also can be planted.

Getting your soil ready to plant:

I recommend an inch of sandy loam and two or three inches of compost. Also, spread ten pounds of a 10-10-10 fertilizer and three pounds of prilled lime for every 100 square feet of garden. I have clay soil that is heavy and packs together and this really works for me.

Soak vegetable seeds overnight before planting. Once planted, cover them with compost to avoid soil crusting. Mulch to keep planting bed moist and provide shade during initial establishment. Monitor and control insect pests that prevent a good start of plants in your fall garden. Happy planting, Faira
