  1. You may have to go the "get a little at a time until the set is complete" route if you don't want to spend a lot of money.  There are all kinds of good clubs out there.  Try out different brands and see which ones you like.  I'm partial to Nike myself.  Whichever club you need the most, I'd say get that first.  Get a good 3 wood and tee of with that until you find a driver that suits you.

  2. Prosimmon X30 Hybrid Full Golf Club Package

I purchased these clubs as a birthday gift for my fiance' who has been planning to learn the game. We started taking lessons together and these clubs are great for him as a beginner. He loves this set and is really looking forward to getting better at the game so that he can really get some good use out of them. Great set for the price! Perfect for beginners!

  3. Honestly, if you're not great, but you are addicted and plan to play for a long time get some good clubs that might cost some.

However, since you're getting a whole set I would focus on 2 things irons and wedges.  Woods, drivers, hybrids, and even putters change so much and do get better every other year or so.  Irons and wedges don't change as much especially wedges so if you invest in those you'll be good for years.

I personally like to get clubs that I can grow into like small cavity backs like Mizuno mp-60's, pro II's, Callaway X-tour, Ping's w/o offset or Titleist.

If you get larger oversized you'll hit it a little further, but won't develop as much feel.  I found that Nike Slingshots go an easy 8-10 yds further per club; just alot of mass behind the ball.

The best way to avoid high prices is to buy used or older models new online, ebay, or stores like SecondSwing or Golfsmith.

I like www.golfreview.com for a general feel of clubs.  Good luck and have fun trying clubs out.  Trying them out is an absolute must, you can't just buy from reviews online.
