Hey everyone. I'm a freshman in high school and we have just recently started our 2nd six weeks. Ever since last year, 8th grade, i've wanted to be home schooled. My mother and dad doesn't agree with me. Last night, I done some research and wrote a letter to my mom along with MANY reasons why I want to be home schooled. But apparently... it's not enough. :[

I need something to fully convince my parents that home schooling isn't such a bad idea. Can anyone please give me some advice to tell them? And also, if anyone knows of some GREAT online schooling that they offer for the state of Texas, can you please give me the link?

If you have any advice or any suggestions please post them. i'd most greatly appreciate any responses!

  1. There are no free online schools for high school although there are plenty of online schools to pay for. You'll have to search around a bit and find out what they offer and what they cost. In the end though, there's no way to guarantee that your parents will believe that an online or distance learning program will be as good. The one that comes to mind that might be the most convincing is the one out of the University of Texas at Austin http://www.utexas.edu/cee/dec/ .

If education is there only concern, then keep focusing on finding something that would meet their concerns. As for mentions of "Homeschooling will ruin your social life," it will ONLY if you let it. I know plenty of very socially active homeschooled teens who would hate to have their social lives cut back on to go to school.

  2. Give it time as far as your parents are concerned while you continue to gather information on curriculum, laws, local homeschool support. This is a really big decision from your parents perspective. Homeschooling is still a 'swim upsteam', mysterious to those outside of it endeavor. The responsibilty of your education leaglly shifts from the school to your parents' shoulders. That can be a scary thing. Give it a little time for the information to settle in and be pondered.

If they would be open to going to a local homeschool co-op meeting, that may be helpful. They will see that they have some support as parents, be surprised at how many are doing it, meet the kids and see they are not only academically bright but even friendly and polite. They will hear from parents whose older children are in college and thriving.  It will give you a chance to meet other homeschooling teens as well. Sometimes real people are more convincing than statistics.

  3. sorry your parents are right they would have to be your teachers stay in school  home schooling is a choice that you must really sit down and talk with  your parents about you cant write a letter and then say ok lets do it home schooling takes time and determination on both the teacher and students  and can be costly stay in school

  4. Well first off why do you want to be homeschooled? If it's because school is too hard, and you think online school or home school will be easier, think again. You need to be even more self motivated and willing to work hard and learn.

  5. I think you can show them you are responsible and motivated........show them a PLAN, a schedule for your day. Show them where you can get books from.

  6. I don't know about Texas, but yes, there are some excellent FREE cyber home schools. I knows this is not an option for you...being in Texas, but check out www.pacyber.com and show your parents how there are lots of children positively benefiting from home schooling. maybe they'll find this site interesting. good luck.

  7. DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT do homeschooling!

It's horrible! Take it from someone who was homeschooled, it's so bad.

You get cut off from the world.

Even if you're bein made fun of every day, going is the better route then staying at home.

Even sleeping in and staying up late loses it's fun after about a week!

I repeat; do NOT do it. Please. It'll ruin your life and friendships.

  8. Being cheerfully obedient to your parents about school while you continue to research and then present your argument will go a long way!

The suggestions given above to have them research and perhaps meet other homeschoolers is a good one as well.

Honestly, you don't state your religous convictions but if you are a Christian ask God for His help and if it's the right thing for you your parents will come around. Perhaps this is something you need to dig into and be solid on for YOUR children.
