  1. do you want the hornets to look dead or alive?

If you want them to look alive, it's going to be some work. Easiests is if you put them into the freezer until they are frozen - use a bag or box not to freak everybody else in your family out. Then get one at a time out of the freezer. While it thaws the joints collect water which makes them movable. If you dry to move legs of dead hornets they would break. You will need a lot of pins and a piece of styrofoam or something similar. Use the pins to fix the body parts of the hornet in a natural position (not jamming a pin through a body, this makes things easier, but is probably not what you plan to do. One you have everything arranged to your satisfaction let dry at least over night. If you are careful you can than take the pins away and all legs should stay in their usual position. Then you can glue the hornet whereever you want it.

I would put the nest in the freezer as well, just to kill any remaining insect life like mites, then take out and just keep in a dry place, it should keep.

Why would you use spray paint unless you want to spraypaint everything some weird color? It really depends if you want to keep it as natural as possible or if you want to do some art project though...
