I applied for a job, went through 2 months of interviews, testing, etc., and was made an offer last Wednesday. The offer was for a call center cust svc position at an health insurance company. It was contingent upon passing a background check and drug screening. I received a call today from a place called General Information Services. The gal said that since I had self-employment on my application, I would need to send them proof of this by faxing copies of my schedule c's for 2002-2004. I looked back at all of my income tax paperwork and could only find a schedule c for 2003. I started a new job in 3/2004 and knew I didn't have any income between jan and mar 2004 so that was understood. I faxed off the 2003 Schedule C and told the gal that I didn't think I made the $600 necessary to file the income in 2002 so I didnt have anything for that. I was still looking for a 1099 from 2002 when my husband wanted to know why I was so frantic. I told him the situation. He then reminded me that I hadn't stated my business until after my father in law died, 2/2003, and was still homeschooling then. OMG!!! I checked back and he was right. I don't know why I had those dates messed up...anyhow, I called the company back, sent a new fax, and called and left a message for the girl that called that made me the offer to explain the situation.

Am I screwed???? I don't know what to do. If they rescind the offer because of my stupidity, I'll just die....

  1. I doubt you're screwed. It's basic they want to know where you were working and when for the background check. Since you've done all you can to prove where you were working and told them it was simply an error you should be fine. No worries. Everyone makes mistakes, your willingness to admit to, and fix the problem should be viewed as an asset. Wish I were the employer and could garuntee it though....
