I'm reading the foot book to a special ed preschool whose ages range from 2-5. It's for a class, and I need an activity to go with the book aftewards, and I'm focusing on opposites for the activity. But I can think of/find things that would work well in a normal preschool or with a lot of kids, but nothing that would work for them.

There are 5 in the class, and out of those 5, only 2 know their colors, some letters, and some numbers. The rest don't really know much. So none of them can read or write.

So I'm looking for any activity ideas on opposites that I could do with special ed, or could be easily adapted to special ed. Please help, I have to do this on Tuesday and I have no ideas.

  1. you could just cut out paper 'feet' that are all different sizes and colors. When you read the book and it says, 'blue foot' have all the kids with the paper blue foot hold their 'foot' up.


  2. What kind of special ed are we talking about? And don't under-estimate the ability of a special learner.

    Also... with the foot book you could do some activities dealing with body parts.  Work one-on-one and have them place stickers on the body part you name. Or have them decorate tracings of their feet. Or make art by having them walk across paper with painted feet and then put their handprints on it too.

    Don't get so held up on the fact that they don't know their colors, letters, numbers, shapes... focus on what they do know and expand from there. Same with their abilities... focus on what they can do and adapt ideas to fit their needs.

  3. You could paint their feet and show that some are big and some are small. Paint your feet as well, or just one foot.

    Go through magazines of clip art on your computer and print up things that are opposites, sunny and rainy, full and empty, etc. Put them on an index card and write the words, it's great for recognization.

    Afterwards, you could mix up the opposites and see if the children can try to figure out what the opposites are again on their own.

    For a snack you could have something like Big crackers and little crackers.

    For a song you could sing it LOUD and then quiet.

    Have them walk around the classroom and find opposites in their (a big baby doll and a small baby doll).

    Play outside by having them take big steps and little steps, run and walk, touch their toes and reach for the sky.

  5. Try a painting activity to help those with their letters, the others with their number and the other just paint.

  6. What about hand prints left, right and done with black and white paint. You could use foot prints too or just shoes, this could give the opportunity for big shoes and small shoes. Have fun.

  7. how about making cut outs of feet and making some big, some little and put them around the room for the kids to step on and not make it structered, just as they are examining them, say things like your looking at the little foot...ect

    also you could have them each decorate a pair of feet. they can choose big or little feet and decorate them however you see fit (paint, crayons, markers) ect

  8. physical opposites, have them stand up very tall and then have them crouch down, very short.  Think of things they can do like walk, stop.  Run,  stop.  easy simple physical movements. Sing, quiet. etc.
