Question:

I need some help with my artist statement?

I need to write a brief artist statement (25-50 words) for a postcard sized painting that was assigned to me last week. My painting is supposed to portray my journey to the college that I am about to attend this fall (Mass Art) and I am just not sure how to go about writing an artist statement that short. What am I supposed to put in there? Am I supposed to explain my painting,or do I write about why I chose to use paint, and why I painted what I did? If you're interested, here is a link to my painting, I would appreciate some feedback on my painting as well.

  1. An artist's statement can be tricky to write, and the length restriction makes it that much harder.

Sine the assignment was to portray your journey to the college, I think you should write about how the image that you painted relates to your academic journey.  Is there a specific symbolic meaning to the image?  If the meduim was part of the assignment, you should not waste space talking about why you chose to use acrylic paint.

I really enjoy the painting - good color choices, and I love impasto paintings.  I think you are moving in a positive direction compared to some of your earlier work (but that could just be my personal preference for this kind of work).  I enjoy your "cubist experiment" as well.

This reminds me of some tiny abstracts that I've done - http://austinartgirl.com/images/painting... for one example.

Congrats on going to Mass Art!
