Is it normal for when you're writing you're own story, you pull some ideas from other books you have read? Like you read a really good book and you think that the writing style was great and you would like to write in the same flow? Is this like stealing their ideas? Or no?

  1. I think everyone at one time or another has said "Boy, I wish I had thought of that!".  Try this....write down the characters from the books you like, list their attributes and then write down opposite attributes.  For instance, turn the young 6 foot 4 muscular criminal defense lawyer hunk into a short older kind of dumpy balding accountant and then build on that until you have something original.  Think of the plots you've read and do the same thing.  Turn the plot around until it's so completely different from what you've read but equally as interesting.  Good Luck!

  2. It's normal to feel a tug down the path of least resistance.  Let it inspire you to come up with something of your own that good.  You will build your own style out of what you read, and what you think about what you've read.  You'll learn tricks of showing and telling and dialogue and all that stuff.  Just write the best you can, but write it as the first you, rather than the 1000th J.K. Rowling.  Don't chase the market, make the market chase _you_...and be prepared to catch rejections along the way in the process of getting ahead of the pack.

  3. It is kind of normal that writers tend to take things out of books or movies. However, they almost always do this without realizing it, and correct it later, or edit it a bit. Because if you really copy an idea or style, it could be either seen as plagiarism or people will say something like: 'It's the same as this book.' or 'it's not original, I've read something like this before.'

So if I were you I'd avoid it, and just try to use your own creativity and ideas.

That way you can be more proud of it as well.

    Good luck with writing!

  4. you can't pull ideas for plot or storyline, but to mimic the tone of the book is no problem.  You can't take words or ideas, but if its just the way you're writing it is the same, that's fine. hope that makes sense.

  5. no as long as your idea is different its not wrong to write in the style that they wrote in
