Absolutely definitely let him decide. No child above the age of about 8 likes having their parents do up their room completely. You can of course put your foot down (as my mam used to every time I asked for a blue and purple room - apparently it would look "too cold") about what he is allowed to do or not, but mainly let him decide and he'll really appreciate that.

Once he's decided what he wants (colour, theme etc) you can help out a bit. For example, if he's chosen a Man United soccer themed room, you can help by finding red paint and Man United accessories. If he picks something really personal, like art, you might want to leave him to it - picking a painting for an artist, glass ornaments for a glass enthusiast etc can go badly wrong, as you probably won't know much about the subject but they'll know a LOT.

Basically, let him do most of the deciding, help where you can, but where it comes down to personal taste always let him have the last word! Remember, his room is his own personal space, not a design feature of your house.

I think you should go with a sports theme. Most boys love sports. His favorite NBA,NFL,NBL, & NHL, team would be a good them and he wouldnt have to worry about out growing it

let him decide what he wants, but if he likes sports or music get him posters of bands and sports stars, if he likes to read get a book shelf and some books, get a desk for him you can also paint the room with permission from the land lord if you don't own the house

If not, do like two colors for the theme like navy and khaki so that he will not outgrow it!
