I need some idea on where to take a bunch of preschool children for a field trip about space. Any ideas??

all the local museums have exhibits that are a bit to advanced for ages 3-5.

It depends on where you live.  Call the local library and ask them about resources in the area.  They may even have a prepared presentation that would be great for preschool children.

in san diego, ca the ruben h fleet science and space center.....other places call the local colleges ask for someone in the science area(particularlly astromomy) and ask if they can prepare something age approiate......try calling the local museums and maybe they can do a simpler space/astromomy unit for your group.....

Is there a planetarium near you?  The one in my area does two different programs geared for pre-school age children that are wonderful.  If not, you could ask at the museums if they do a program for this age level.  Also, if there is a college or university nearby, check with their science department to see if they have anything available.  Another possibility is the public library.  Maybe the librarian in the children's room could do a program for the children.

It's hard to find something appropriate for that age group. Why not turn your classroom into a space station or turn your dramatic play area into a space ship? There is so much you can teach them within the classroom if there isn't an appropriate place nearby to take them to.

An observatory is an excellent idea. Or, a children's museum. Children's museums usually have a section about space (so i would call or check out the website before I decided to go). And Going to a children's museum you wont have to worry about the kids breaking things.

If you are in the L.A. area, take them to Griffith Observatory.  You'll need to make reservations though.

Well if you were close to Amarillo Tx I would tell you to take them to the Don Harrington Fun Center.

That's a hard question to answer, not knowing where you are.  Space Center Houston is awesome for kids, if you're in this area...

I live in Vancouver, WA. Across the bridge a ways into portland, or, their is a science museum that has little of something for every one of every age. They have show at the planetarioum that is a cartoon of two kids that make a rocket out of a card board box in their back yard. They go to all the planets in their rocket and a man on the screen of the computer on board tells the kids about all the planets and such. It's a great way to get the kids imaginations going when they get back from it. Maybe they could make their own rocket with aBIG card board box to share.  We took our 4-5 year old classes and kindergarten classes to it, they loved it! If you don't live in the area, check to see what planetariums you have in the area. Here is the info about the show I was talking about. I don't know if other places have it, but wouldn't hurt to ask. Good luck!
