  1. No matter where you adopt from, you must have a home study done by a licensed social worker - no ifs ands or buts about it.  And yes, they check out your house to make sure that it is a fit home for the child.  They don't want to move a child from one difficult situation to another.

  2. It's called a homestudy and they will simply ask you where the child is going to sleep / make sure you have a bed for him / maybe ask you a little bit of financial questions...they are making sure that the child isn't going to be put into worse conditions than they are already in.

  3. The home study is not as scary as you think. We aren't wealthy either and we are at the final end of our adoption process. When the case workers come to your home what they are looking for is to see where the child will sleep, is there a bed? & dresser the normal stuff.

They basically have to see where the child will live. It isn't a big deal, and it goes so quickly they're in & then poof they go makes you wonder what all the fuss was about.  Don't be afraid. Just tidy up the day they come, they know real people live there so they don't expect prefection.

    You'll do fine.

  4. I assume you are using a lawyer for the adoption?  If not, tell your parents to get one.  The lawer will be able to answer questions like this and 'smooth' things with the adoption in general.  They will certainly be able to either recommend or get a recommendation from somewhere on getting your home study completed.

  5. contact your county department of social services. They'll send out a worker to complete your homestudy and your "last thing" will be done.

  6. I'm going to guess but I think your being told that you need a "home study" which is routine and required before adopting a child. You'll  need to contact a private licensed social worker to accomplish this for you.

  7. It sounds like this is the home visit portion of the homestudy.  People sweat this a LOT more than necessary.  The social worker is there to determine that you have a safe home environment for the child.  Things like: running water, no holes in the roof, no rat infestations, reasonably clean, etc.

The social worker isn't going to go through your medicine cabinet or run a white glove over the coffee table.

You'll probably be asked some basic questions about your feelings about the adoption.  The Social worker isn't going to put you in a dark room, shine a light in your eyes and interrogate you as to whether your parents let you watch too much TV.

Try to relax and be yourself.  It's not a terrible experience at all.  All adoptive families have done it.

  8. The "last thing you need" is someone checking your house?

    I don't understand your meaning.

Do you live in a shithole?

I would think that they'd want to make good and certain that your home is fit and decent before they allow you to adopt this child, blood relation or not.
