My father was in the USMC in 1976-1979. I am trying to make a scrapbook of his service. This is really difficult because he passed away. I have requested his military personnel file and all of his medals, ribbons and rewards. I have received his Report of Separation (there is not much information on it.) I would like to try to find people that might have known him on Military.com but I do not know what division he was in...He had two specialties ~ 0311 Rifleman ~ 8621 SurvSensoOper. Can anyone tell me what divisions those would be? Am I getting ahead of myself...would this information be in his personnel file? Any information would be appreciated. Thank you.

  1. His last duty station was in the Headquarters Company of the Headquarters of the First Marine Division.  So he was either Division Headquarters staff section (probably either the G2 (iIntelligence) or G3 (Training and Operations) with the 8621 MOS.  Best place to look is find a 1st Marine Division site and ask about any one who knew him; try military.com and they have a unit section and find people in that unit and ask if any one knew him.  They can tell you where else he served before he was transferred there most likely; these should get you started.

  2. You need to request his SRB (Service Record Book) I am not sure where you would request it but you will need the following: Social Security #, Date of Birth, Possibly his service #, and his full name. Good luck.

On a personal note be careful or be perpared for details that you might get in your searches. Service men sometimes carry baggage that is best left packed away.

  3. His division should be listed somewhere in his records..You need to look for something thats says either 1st Marine Division, 2nd Mar DIv., or 3rd Marine Division

Just look for the abbreviations MAR. DIV or a unit number such as 1/5, 2/1, 1/3..or look for some sort of unit number or name...

    Your father was in ..

    Headquarters Company

Headquarters Battalion, 1st Marine Division located onboard Camp Pendleton, CA

And may your father rest in peace..Semper Fi
