Question:

I need some new irons..?

I have a set of old Pings that I use now; but recently I played with a set of Callaway Hawkeye's and hit my iron shots better than I've ever had before. I experienced better ball striking than I'd ever had.

I need to get some new irons. What are the best ballstriking irons for the money and what would be the best place to purchase them?

  1. That depends on the individual, i switched from ping eye 2 to callaway x-18 2 years ago and have no regrets, it made a big difference for me in feel control and distance, but i also like Taylor made irons, but if you want to spend lots and get the ultimate irons you can get some titelist with the diamond grooves. they are very nice and you can sure put some backspin but they are hard on the ball cover.

  2. Was your swing the same the day you played the Calloways as it was when you hit the pings?  A different club shouldn't make that much difference in how solidly you make contact.  A club may have a different result, buy you expressly state that your ball striking was improved.  Maybe the Calloways just fit you better.  The clubs have nothing to do with your ball striking ability.  Pings now are all custom fit from the factory so maybe your old set just wasn't set up well for you.

  3. Nickent's are the longest. I play the 3DX version and love them.

  4. best value is last year or two's models. Callaway has great quality and resale value. Amazon.com could find you some. I love my 2007 X-20 tour Callaways with rifle shafts. Golfclub exchange.com is another good site for value and selection. Get fitted too, very important.

  5. I had a set of ping eye 2 black dot 1990 models and got rid of them and brought a set of wilson fatshaft and never struck the ball better ond gained about 20 meters in length. The best place in my opinion to buy is ebay.Depending on how much money you want to spend Wilsons are great value for money. But if you want a great quality club i would go for the callaway x forged.

  6. If you are striking the ball well, then I would give serious consideration to the Mizuno MP-60s.  The have a very soft feel due to the forging process that Mizuno uses.  This set has been out for 2+ years so you should be able to find a decent price on them as well.

If you are looking for even moreso of a player's iron then the MP-67 is amazing.  The workability and feedback of these is 2nd to none in my opinion.
