My daughter is 20 months and we are starting potty training. I was just wanting to know some tips and tricks others have used that maybe I can try along the way. Thanks!

  1. Strip her naked at home, put  a potty in the livingroom and tell not to pee or poo on the floor and if she does show her and make her help you clean it up, give her 1 or 2 smarties everytime she pees or poos. Also everywhere I went (Wallmart, in-laws house), I would immediately take her to the bathroom and try to pee. I would ask my son every 30 minutes if he had to pee. The routine is what they have to get used to first, and it's all about consistency, go pee when they wake up, go pee before breakfast, go pee before nap time, etc. etc. My son was trained at 26 months.

  2. my sister tried a sticker chart...and let her daughter put a sticker on the chart whenever she went in the potty or at least tried to go in the potty

  3. If you really think she's ready (wants to wear undies, is aware of when she is wet/dirty and doesn't like it, is verbal enough to be able to talk/understand about it) I would try 'naked training.'  Remove her diaper and pants and let her run around bottomless/naked.  When she pees, point it out to her.  Suggest she try the potty next time.  If she really IS physically ready, she should make the connection pretty quickly, and will start 'making it' on time most of the time within a couple of days.  If she ISN"T ready --- put her back in diapers and wait until she is -- which will probably be in 6-18 months. (20 months is very early for real potty training; most kids are ready between 2 1/2 and 4.)

  4. My daughter was pretty easy as far as potty training when she was finally ready, but I did use the sticker chart later on.  She likes to give me a hard time when I ask her to use the potty before leaving the house or before naps and bedtime, so I used the sticker chart to encourage her going.  They think just because they don't feel like they have to go, then they don't need to sit and try.  My daughter has been totally into stickers for the past year, so all I had to say was "if you sit on the potty and try to go you get a sticker on your chart" and she'd be on the potty in a flash.  Also we had spaces for when she was accident-free at naps and bedtime.

  5. My pediatrician adviced me not to potty train my child until she was at least 2 1/2 yrs old.  If you start too early, your child can become frustrated and therefore, will regress and it will take you longer to potty train. Most kids before 2 1/2 yrs old still have immature bladders and can't hold in their pee before they reach the potty. So, before you start potty training....consult her pediatrician first.

  6. when she does good give her a favorite food or candy it helps

  7. I went out and bought my daughter princess panties and then she got gummy bears everytime she went to the potty.  It was an exciting time and I made it very fun and reminded her that she was such a big princess.  We were trained within 2 weeks.  Good Luck and God Bless!
