I need to create one lesson for gross motor, and one sensory/science lesson. Anyone have any suggestions? The children are of ages 3-5, and are a very hectic group that gets out of control easily. Any good ideas?

  1. gross motor - have a snowball fight this time of year - give them each a piece of paper, wad it up and start throwing - blow your whistle for STOP to get them back under control.

sensory table - we have bubbles in our sensory table right now - we have also used sand, construction vehicles, beans, corn, flour.

science table -we have balancing bears out right now - we also have a microscope , plants, insects, anything from outdoors although avoid nuts because of so many peanut allergies out there.

    Good luck.

  2. for gross motor, there are lots of different things you could do to keep those wiggle worms busy!

-play red light/green light or mother may I with different types of motions (walk, skip, hop, jump, run, gallop, slide, etc.)

-there are a lot of songs out there that encourage gross motor skills, like I know there is a Greg and Steve one that uses different animal movements, New Zoo Review I think it is called; or you could find the cd for the carnival of the animals and have the kids act out how the animals move

-relay races using different types of motions

-incorporate language arts by laying out big letter cards and have them march/skip/hop/run/walk/jump/crawl/slith... around the ABC's and then when the music stops, pick up the letter that is closest and tell what letter it is or what sound it makes

for sensory/science, one of my favorites is making "clean mud" - you grate ivory soap into shavings (or I think you can buy it already in shavings?), tear up some toilet paper, and add water. Squish it all together, and it feels really cool! Plus for clean-up all you have to do is rinse and dry.

Or you could try Oobleck/goup/I've heard lots of names for it, but basically you just mix cornstarch and water an dit makes this awesome stuff that acts like a solid when you apply pressure by hitting it/rolling it/jumping on it, but then when the pressure stops it goes into a liquid. Really fun, but a little messy.
