  1. If they are older tattoos and not brand new and it is only the black outlines I would question the ink that was used. There are no set standards or regulations on tattoo ink and some of it is much better than others. If he got all of the tattoos done at the same shop/same artist, I would check with them to see if they changed ink brands somewhere down the line.

I have a similar problem with my first tattoo and it was because it was done with crappy ink and done too deeply. It flares up once in awhile and gets scaly as well. I had it redone and that helped, thank goodness it was a small one and I had a different shop/artist do the work so it doesn't give me as much trouble.

Check what inks a tattoo artist uses or even if they make their own and stay away from them if they do unless you want to do a test patch first. If you have never had red ink then a test is probably a good idea since red is a color lots of people have problems with. I worked with a woman that got a foot tattoo (very simple almost cartoon style) and she had a reaction to the blue ink they used and had to be treated for an allergic reaction and can have flare ups or her body can reject the ink.

I love tats and have 5 of them, 2 are larger but I still question an artist the first time they ink me and I am aware that not all inks are alike and I still could have a reaction even though I have over 15 different colored inks on me from all my tats combined.
