I need some xBox Orig/360 help?

I got the xBox version for my 360 Elite because I had already beaten DooM3 (the regular one) on it. My 360 told me that the game wasn't compatible, so I'm going to get an update disk by mail from Microsoft. My question is how this directly affects my 360. Does it change the operating system in any way or does it simply program in a bit of extra coding? Is it one complete disk that will completely change the way my 360 works/runs, or is it simply allowing it to play more original xBox games without affecting the core system itself at all? Lastly, is there any chance of some kind of permanent or lasting ramification? I'd like these answers to be from people who have either used these update disks or know through first hand experience how this data will affect my system, please.

you will be fine.. I did it myself with them when for some reason the upload off Xbox live didnt let my old games run.. only a few games do this. Good luck
