Okay, so I want to make the foreground stand out in this picture. How can I do this? It's a picture of me plus I've already blurred the background a whole bunch. I have MS Paint and GIMP to work with (Link below).

  1. In GIMP, use the free select tool. It looks like a string in a circle. If you can't find it, then just press F while in the program. Then select the area around your face (assuming that's what you want to be sharper). After you do that, go to filter>enhance>sharpen. Slide the sliders around a bit and hit okay.

Then go to color>curves and play around with the curves. It starts out as a straight diagonal line. Make the upper part of the line curve up more by clicking on it. A dot will appear on the line. Drag the dot around.

Then, duplicate the layer. You do this in the layers tab. What you do now is delete your face off of that layer by hitting the delete button. If you don't have the latest GIMP, you'll have to use ctrl+k or go to edit>delete. On your layer, hit ctrl+shift+a to make it select nothing. Or you could go to select>none or something like that. Then go to filter>blur>gaussian blur. Set it to about 4-5. Hit okay.

Now on the layer change the layer opacity around until it looks good. If you want, you can also change the layer mode until it looks nice.

    Hope this helped!

  2. Try a computer or photography forum. . . .

I would start with a clearer picture, as a poor quality cell phone image will not clean up and be bold the way you want.
