My son's high school is a small country school with anywhere from 120-175 kids in each of the 9th through 12th grades. They have a small varsity football team (31 players which is up from 25 last year) and have a difficult time recruiting players as they've never had a winning record since inception 30 years ago.

The soccer team has tons of players and seems to get more attention in our area.

My problem with this is that our high school's Athletic Director is also the head varsity soccer coach!!! I consider this a conflict of interest; double-dipping.... All of the other fall sports teams seem to suffer because of his lack of time to be involved as A.D....

My son, who bever complains about his teachers, says that this guy HATES the football players.

The A.D. is also the liaison with the school board members ...

Your thoughts??? Any ideas on how this should be approached by parents of the other fall sports teams?

Thanks!

  1. Oh i totally belive it, our soccer coach at my school  hated all football players and all football coaches, football was biger even though soccer won states football was bigger and football would steal some of the better athletes from soccer, one plays in NFL now i bet he is glad he didnt stick with soccer.... but anyways i  wish i could tell you what to do besides that for some reason i tottally belive you b/c of the situation at my highschool i would maybe aproach one of the football coachs to verify the accusations then i wouldnt know what to tell you but it might not be your kid is lying but misinterpreting the coaches intentions

  2. There is a book, "The Last Coach" by Allen Barra.  It is about the life of Coach Bryant.   The controversial "Junction Boys" episode in 1954 where Coach had 2 of 3 players quit before training camp was over.  That camp changed lives.   There is an ESPN film abut the "Junction Boys" who have a reunion at the training site before Coach died in 1983.  With all my heart, I believe a team cannot be losers if the locker room is together as one.  Forget the A.D.  Draw closer together and seek help with improving the fundamental blocking and tackling skills.   Find focus in asking the coach to limit the practice no more than 10 plays from offense and work on those plays for the game.  I would hope no player would give in to the A.D. scheme to eliminate the team.  Remember, Mr. Tom Landry and Coach Bryant.  The both were calm game day coaches.  "Bear" once said to a sports writer who was worried about the lack of jumping and shouting by the team before a game.  Coach replied:  "The team is supposed to strike like a snake, not jump and shout."   The team members have to take a strong leadership role including asking other school mates to join the team.   Forget the establishment.   Show the world that a unified group of young men can accomplish much.  Forget the politics.  If these kids will stick together and win half their games, they will know in 10 years from now that they were champions.  Ask to visit the training camp of a large football training session to learn practice habits.  Or even visit a college to watch their drills.  Instead of working the beauacray, I would work on team building based on the human spirit.  Ask for help from any willing source.  Like a retired coach who may donate some time to your small outfit.   Keep he faith.

  3. Well I do understand where you are coming from. As an answer, I should write that there probably is a PTA (Parent Teacher Association)  or PTO (Parent Teacher Organization) Where you can meet with teachers and Staff of the High School, and incorporate your Ideas. As far as what this guy thinks he is doing...I have no clue, I play Freshman ball for my High School Football team, and We don't have any APPARENT problems. However, In your case I would once again reccomend getting together with The Teachers and Staff, and Resolving your problem, and getting the football team where it needs to be.

    I hope this helps :)

  4. As much as it sucks, there isnt much you can do. Unless you can prove he somehow manipulating the program to make kids play soccer instead of football. But that wont be easy to do.

Maybe you should just plant kiddie p**n on him and make an anonymous phone call..jk.

  5. Maybe you can write an anonymous letter to your local papers editor and see if your concerns can be voiced in print. It may at the very least reach someone that has the resources to fix this problem. Our local paper hear prints the letters to the editor. People sound of about everything from potholes in the road to bad food in restaurants. It is one of the most interesting reads in our paper.

I hope it all works out for you.

  6. I dont know if theres much you can do about it. Its unfortunate, but I bet a lot of people have noticed this too. Its wrong what this guy is doing, but it's not exactly illegal.

Sorry, but this guy kind of has the schools fall athletics' balls in a vice grip.

Maybe you could get some football parents together to confront this guy about why he favors one sport over the other, but other than that it seems like he has all the angles covered. School board, him being the soccer coach AND athletic director.

First though, Id talk to the schools head football coach, because if he has a gripe with this guy, then you'll know its for real. You'll want as many people from the school on your side as you can get. The football coach will give you the best opinion on the matter.
