  1. I was one for 2 families.

In this day and time I would do general personality questions and a criminal background check along with several reference checks.  Also, set up several scenarios and ask the person what they might do. You might also ask their views on disrespectful children, spankings, learning by example, etc.   Lay boundaries immediately for what you won't allow your child to be exposed to (movie ratings, music, or name calling), use of cell phones and computers during awake times and make sure no other people will be around (no friends or boyfriends).

If you decide the person did the interview well, I would encourage the person to come over and have a trial run of it with your child(ren) while you're still at home. And during your first outtings I would show up unexpectedly and if at all possible make sure your child can identify problems like "bad touches" or strangers and instill in them an open communication between you and the child. (If you ever question your nanny because of what your child says, you need to confront the nanny away from the child and don't empower the child to feel you're taking sides but rather checking into it.  You don't want the child to learn how to manipulate mommy or nanny by playing one against the other.)
