We had an earthquake here in Southern California yesterday morning that shook pretty hard. I was at work when it happened but when I got home there were alot of things knocked over in my bedroom and even some broken things. My cat got so scared with the shaking and the noise of things falling and breaking that he went under my bed and has not come out since. He has not eaten anything since yesterday morning at 6:00 a.m. I have tried sweet talking to him but it is not working. I need some suggestions please.

  1. This happened to my cat with the big quake, in 1989 ( I believe that was the year) in No. California. My cat stayed in the cupboard for 2 weeks only coming out to eat and use the litter. Your cat will come out soon. Put his food and litter nearby. He will now always react to loud noises now. My cat lived to be over 18 years of age and would startle at every noise since that quake.

  2. Agreed with the other answer.  Put food and water down there and maybe even a box with some sand in it.  He is probably in shock.

If he doesn't come out tomorrow, I would take him out however you can - he could be injured.  My cats always hide when they are injured.

Good luck with him!  I have 3 cats so I understand what you're going thru.

  3. I don't know how old your cat is, but one way we always get out cats out of hiding is to get a string and dangle it around near them, hopefully it will assure him things are back to normal and he will come out and play then pick him up and show him his food.

  4. Try using some catnip...?

make a trail of it that leads out then have some of it sprinkled onto a food bowl.

    Hope it works! Poor cat!

  5. Place food and water under the bed with him. He'll have a hard time coming out after being threw that.

Best of wishes after the earthquake.
