Question:

I need surgery and have no insurance?

I am low income, no health insurance and need a large mass removed from my thyroid. Will a doctor require a deposit before surgery? Will they deny me surgery if the suspect I can't pay? If I can't pay will I face financial tragedy? It seems unfair to be punished because you can't afford health insurance. I have a disabled child at home and couldn't work if I wanted to. Any advise?

  1. You're already IN financial tragedy.

You need to fix the low income problem, somehow.  Even with the disabled child.  You'll need to ask for state support services for that child.

Regarding the surgery - you  can get an agreed price at the outset, for this surgery, both from the doctor and the hospital.  Then  you can go on a payment plan.

You're not being "punished" for not having health insurance.  This is a natural consequence of not working, and not finding a way to work at home (like running a daycare!).  It's not punishment.

  2. AmeriPlan will let you use your benefits as soon as you sign up with no waiting!

  3. You need to and get Medical card from the Health Dept.Since you are disabled and can Not work they should be able to give it to you.Good Luck and I hope all goes well when you have your surgery.

  4. My sister just had surgery to remove a mass and didn't have insurance.  She spoke with the surgeon about it and when she received his bill, he only charged her $230.00.  The hospital charged her full price for her stay there and the facility for the surgery so she has applied for assistance.  Every hospital will allow you to apply for assistance.  As long as you are honest and prove that you cannot afford it, they will either forgive the debt or lower the amount due and put you on a payment plan.  The most important thing you must remember is good communication with the billing departments.  Best of luck.

  5. Call local hospitals and ask to speak to their finance departments. They should be able to give you a cost estimate based on your specific circumstances and will likely have suggestions for you.

BTW, have you checked into your eligibility for your state’s healthcare program?
