I need technical help for someones modem/router problem?

I have been having issues with Wireless Routers and my Virgin Media modem. Every now and then the send and receive lights from the modem will just go off. I lose the internet whilst not loosing the wireless connection. I have since replaced my router with a different brand but i still have the same issue.

I called Virgin Media and of course they don't support routers. So they told me to connect via an RJ45 cable and do some ipconfig and ping tests and I have no issues.

Can anyone suggest anything?!

For two different brands of router to have the same issue then it must be a problem with the modem, right?
