  1. the term is unjust enrichment.  It is a theory that is often applied in contract cases to hold a party liable despite having a defense to the contract.  For example, if a party cancelled a contract after receiving performance, but for a valid reason, they would be unjustly enriched in allowing them to avoid payment under the contract.  It basically means that once you receive a benefit, you must pay.

  2. The actual term is "unjust enrichment" and here are the definitions:

    >> A legal doctrine stating that if a person receives money or other property through no effort of his own, at the expense of another, the recipient should return the property to the rightful owner, even if the property was not obtained illegally. Most courts will order that the property be returned if the party who has suffered the loss brings a lawsuit. <<

    >> Gain or benefit that is the result of another's efforts or acts but for which that other has received no compensation, and for which the one receiving the benefit has not paid. A person who is deemed by law to have been unjustly enriched at the expense of another is required to make restitution to the other. <<

    >> Unjust enrichment means when a person unfairly gets a benefit by chance, mistake or another's misfortune for which the one enriched has not paid or worked and morally and ethically should not keep. A person who has been unjustly enriched at the expense of another must legally return the unfairly kept money or benefits. Unjust enrichment is an equitable doctrine applied in the absence of a contract and used to prevent one person from being unjustly enriched at another's expense.

         Five elements must be established to prove unjust enrichment:

       1. An enrichment;

       2. An impoverishment;

       3. A connection between the enrichment and the impoverishment;

       4. Absence of a justification for the enrichment and impoverishment; and

       5. An absence of a remedy provided by law. <<

    There is a book of some kind entitled "Unjust Rewards", but from the context of the question, I don't think that is what you meant.
