I need the opinion of a camera whiz/photographer?!

Question

and this camera http://shopping.yahoo.com/p:Canon PowerShot G9 Digital Camera:1994928631

Help?

Also, is it realllly necessary for me to have a 12megapixel camera? I am not a pro, but I want to have a camera that will grow with me and my family.

I'd go with the Canon G9 because of its better image quality. It has less noise in photos taken in low lighting conditions. The Nikon P5100 is smaller, and handles much better with its pronounced hand grip. Both allow you to attach an external flash, however the G9 will be less unbalanced with this additional weight. The G9 has a greater optical zoom, which gives it more flexibility to shoot high quality shots at telephoto range. Remember that these cameras also allow you to take pretty high quality videos too, so that's a bonus.

They are both great cameras. I can see why you are somewhat torn between the two. First read the descriptions of both as I did and decide what features are more important to you. They both have roughly the same features except for they way the function. For instance, the Nikon uses red eye reduction where as the Canon auto corrects red eye automatically. reduces as opposed to corrects in other words. If $100.00 more won't break the budget I say go for the Canon. Best in your decision.

The Canon G series are brilliant but cant coment on teh nikon.

12 megapixels is a lot of marketing hype. if the lens is poor then no matter how big the sensor is it will still have poor definition.

my old G2 picture quality (4meg pix) stood up to the quality of several SLRs including  a 6 meg pix one.

the G ereis were  abit heavy if i remember so not a thing for slipping in your pocket  i always use the following sites very informative in my decision making.
