  1. no its a district. if it were a state then we would have 51 states

  2. It's not a state it is a district. The D.C in Washington D.C stands for District of Columbia.

We have 50 states, several territories, and one district, I believe.

The reason it's not a state is because it houses the US capitol.

  3. It is not a state but is a district.

  4. The founding fathers, including George Washington, decided that the capital of the United States shouldn't be in any one state.  So, they set aside a large plot of land donated by Maryland and Virginia in which to build the new capital city, which became known as Washington.  It's formally a district--the District of Columbia, which has its own city government that is ultimately controlled by the US Congress.

And there is a State of Washington, but that's on the west coast of the United States.

    Addendum:

In response to Girfriend's comment (below):  the original District of Columbia included land from both Maryland and Virginia.  The portion from Virginia was returned to Virginia, I believe in 1846, as the Federal government didn't think they would ever have need for it.  The Virginia portion of the District of Columbia became the city of Alexandria and the county of Arlington.  There are still boundary marker stones showing the original boundary line in Virginia.

  5. Washington DC - DC stands for District of Columbia. It's a district not a state. The land was donated by the state of Maryland (note all of it is north of the Potomac River - Not south to include any of the Virginia side). it is not a state

  6. Washington, D.C. is the capital of the United States, founded on July 16, 1790. The City of Washington used to be a separate municipality within the District of Columbia. An Act of Congress in 1871 created a single government for the entire federal territory, effectively merging the City and the District into a single entity. The city is located on the north bank of the Potomac River and is bordered by the states of Virginia to the southwest and Maryland to the other sides.

So basically, it is a district, not considered a state.

  7. No Washington DC is not a State, it is technically part of Maryland, but not really (if that makes any sense)

It is Washington, District of Columbia.

However there is a Washington State (no DC) that is on the West Coast just North of Oregon and South of Canada.

  8. No it's a district

    DC stands for

    district of Columbia

  9. The DC after Washington stands for Distric of Columbia and no Washington DC is not a state.  But good question!
